A Magyar Szabadság Éve

This party is still the same party – The statement of the 1956 Memorial Committe

On occasion of the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and Freedom Fight the Memorial Committee for 1956 coordinating the Memorial Year for 1956 has asked the parties of the Hungarian Assembly to demonstrate their commitment to the glorious heritage of the Revolution and Freedom Fight in a joint declaration and not to use the greatest national day of our national identity for political purposes. This joint declaration has been signed by all parties concerned except for the Gyula Molnár, the leader of the Hungarian Socialist Party, therefore the Memorial Committee for 1956 is making the following statement to the Hungarian nation.

The Memorial Committee for 1956 founded by the Hungarian Government regrets to see that the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) is not able to leave its shameful past behind. This party has become the part of the democratic Hungarian political scene without having apologised for the sins of its legal predecessor, the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party (MSZMP) since 1989. Not only did this party illegally resort to violence against the peacefully celebrating people by having shot at them in 2006, fifty years after 1956, but also they are not able to leave their shady past behind.

By refusing to sign the joint declaration, as opposed to the rest of the parliamentary parties, the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) has once again proved that even in 2016 they do not wish to embrace the ideal of freedom and independence. By rejecting the common celebration, this party has once again turned back to its disgraceful heritage. Because this party is still the same party!
