Paying tribute to the 1956 Revolution in Belgium

A three-part exhibition has opened in Belgium presenting the personal belongings and relics of the 1956 emigrants to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and Freedom Fight in Brussels sponsored by the Memorial Committee for the 1956 Revolution and Freedom Fight.

The exhibition entitled “A nation shouted” (Sándor MÁRAI) – Honour to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the Emigration to Belgium is not only presenting the events of 1956 and their effects on Belgium from three aspects, but also provides an insight into the history of Hungarian emigration to Belgium from 1920 and the process of the integration of the emigrants into the Belgian society. The most unique part of the exhibition reveals the personal belongings and relics of the 1956 emigrants who arrived to Belgium. By these, the public at large can get to know the history of personal reminiscences, individual stories, adventurous and dangerous escapes, and can get an insight into their lately lives.

The exhibition organized jointly by the Embassy of Hungary in Brussels and the Balassi Institute, the Cultural Service of the Embassy of Hungary in Brussels was opened by ambassador Zoltán Nagy and Zsófia Vitézy, Director of Balassi Institute Brussels. The Ambassador of Hungary in Brussels stressed it in his opening speech that 1956 was a milestone both in the history of Hungary and Europe and it symbolizes the process Hungary had to go through to become an independent member of the European community again. Imre Keszei, emigrant of 1956 to Belgium addressed the 150 attendants.
