Sport and 1956: Gábor Benedek, a modern pentathlete and Olympic champion talked about his experiences in Düsseldorf

The pentathlete, who won an Olympic gold medal in Helsinki – who was the member of revolutionary committee of the Hungarian Olympic team in 1956 – talked about the relations of sport and the freedom fight in Germany in a panel discussion.

The event took place at the Consulate General in Düsseldorf, Germany to commemorate the Melbourne Olympics through the account of Gábor Benedek Olympic champion pentathlete.

The discussion was led by Csaba Szathmáry, retired medical researcher. Beyond doubt the most memorable match of the Melbourne Olympic Games, the so-called “Blood in the Water match”, the Hungary – Soviet Union water polo match was screened at the beginning of the German language programme and the corresponding documentary of the the ARTE TV channel.

The local diplomatic corps, cultural institutions, the representatives of Hungarian churches and organizations, sports people and the press attended the discussion.
