A Magyar Szabadság Éve

The Hungarians and the Swiss have a common ground intellectually, spiritually and also in terms of culture.

The common European heritage and the crucial role of freedom connects the Hungarians and the Swiss – said Zoltán Balog in his address at the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and Freedom Fight in Zurich.

The minister talked about the common intellectual, spiritual, cultural ground that connected Hungary and Switzerland in 1956, which still prevails. He concluded that this common ground enabled the Hungarians who fled to Switzerland to integrate there, and he emphasized that becoming Swiss and remaining Hungarian at the same time is a real success story. This can only happen when there is freedom, and this is exactly what connects the two nations – Zoltán Balog remarked. The commemoration, where Christoph Blocher former member of the Swiss Federal Council gave a speech as well, ended with the concert of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, which was conducted by Tamás Vásáry.
