Zoltan Balog: In 1956, the Hungarians took their fate in their hands

In Bern the Minister of Human Capacities opened the photo exhibition of the French-Swiss press photographer Jean-Pierre Pedrazzini of photos taken in 1956 in Hungary.

According to Zoltan Balog, the events taking place sixty years ago picture the Hungarians as a nation which took its fate in its hands and fought for its autonomy. He added: In Switzerland, it is taken for granted, because of the fact that they are geographically in the middle of the European Union, but still the decide through referenda what kind of life they want for themselves. He also emphasized in his opening speech that being part of the rule of law means being part of the European rule of law, and Hungary is currently defending this as well, apart from our security, at our southern borders. Zoltán Balog reminded the audience that Switzerland welcomed 15 thousand Hungarians in 1956, which could have been burdensome for such a small country. However, those who fled to Switzerland and found shelter there, put their talent to use, became successful and contributed to the welfare of Switzerland.

Press photographer Jean Pierre Pedrazzini, came to Hungary in 1956 for the news of the Revolution in October. In circumstances still unknown, he was shot several times in Budapest and he was taken to hospital. He was transported to Neuilly-sur-Seine with the help of his partner on November 3, but he died from his injuries on November 7, at the age of 29.
